Bangladesh’s transition from a war-ravaged, impoverished country to a rural development success story over four decades has been astounding. What can its experience teach the world about rural revitalization? In an increasingly urbanized world, where nearly 70% of the global population is projected to live in cities by 2050, we are at risk of leaving […]
In response to Bangladesh’s Country Investment Plan for agriculture, food security, and nutrition, the USAID-funded Policy Research and Strategy Support Program (PRSSP) has been providing demand-driven food- and agricultural-policy research since 2010, focusing on seven key areas:
- Agricultural growth and climate change
- Fishery development and livestock sectors
- Gender
- Governance
- Marketing and regional and global trade
- Nutrition
- Social safety nets
The PRSSP generates information on critical issues, strengthens analytical capacity within the country, and stimulates policy dialogue. Its main objectives are to enhance the efficiency of food production and marketing, accelerate income growth of the poor, and improve nutrition for vulnerable groups.
For more information on the PRSSP, please contact Chief of Party and IFPRI Country Representative Dr. Akhter Ahmed.

Pest infestation, especially invasion of 'shoot borer', is much lower in Bt brinjal than other traditional varieties, a latest study showed. Bt brinjal is the first genetically modified (GM) crop ever developed in Bangladesh. Leaf-eating beetles were found 47.1 per cent of plants in case of Bt brinjal when it was 63.7 per cent for […]
Bt Brinjal Study: Pesticide Use Falls, But Risk Remains
The cultivation of Bt brinjal has enabled farmers to reduce pesticide use and log higher profits but the genetically modified vegetable is not fully free from the risk of fruit and shoot borer (FSB) infestation, a new study found. The FSB is one of the most devastating pests that damages up to a third of […]
