TAFSSA District Agrifood Systems Assessment in Bangladesh 2023: Local Market and Retail Census

TAFSSA (Transforming Agrifood Systems in South Asia) is a CGIAR Regional Integrated Initiative aimed at advancing equitable access to sustainable healthy diets, enhancing farmers' livelihoods and resilience, and conserving natural resources such as land, air, and water across South Asia. The TAFSSA district agrifood systems assessment seeks to establish a robust, accessible, and integrated evidence base that connects farm production, market access, dietary patterns, climate risk responses, and natural resource management, with gender considerations integrated throughout. The assessment focuses on rural areas in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal, utilizing a district-level, multi-year approach. Data collection was conducted between December 2022 and January 2023 in the Rangpur and Rajshahi districts of Bangladesh. The study employed a census across 50 villages per district, selected based on the probability proportional to the number of households in each village. The census included all formal and informal multi-vendor markets offering diverse food products, as well as retail food shops within the selected villages. Multi-vendor markets considered in the census included village markets, weekly village markets, roadside/street markets, and wholesale markets (mandis). Retail food shops included local grocery stores, vegetable/fruit shops (green grocers), and specialized shops selling meat, eggs, fish, or dairy products. A pretested, structured questionnaire was used for the census. Data collected included details on vendor density, vendor characteristics, operating hours and days, types of products sold, infrastructure and facilities in shops, waste disposal methods, and GPS coordinates of retail shops and markets.

2022 Social Accounting Matrix for Bangladesh

The 2022 Bangladesh Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) follows IFPRI's Standard Nexus SAM approach, by focusing on consistency, comparability, and transparency of data. The Nexus SAMs available on IFPRI's website separates domestic production into 42 activities. Factors are disaggregated into labor, agricultural land, and capital, with labor further disaggregated across three education-based categories. The household account is divided into 10 representative household groups: Rural and urban households across per capita consumption quintiles. Nexus SAMs support the improvement of model-based research and policy analysis in developing countries and allow for more robust cross-country comparisons of national economic structures, especially agriculture-food systems.

Survey of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Agri-Food Value Chains: Network-Based Recruitment Approach in Bangladesh

The datasets and questionnaires in this package come from the second phase of IFPRI's "Digital Financial Services Adoption among SMEs in the Midstream of Agricultural Value Chains" project. This phase focused on midstream actors in the rice and potato value chains in Bangladesh, using tailored surveys to explore their financial capabilities and constraints. The surveys were conducted between June and August 2023 in the Bogra and Rangpur districts. The data collection was iterative, designed to capture insights from intermediary actors across different segments of the agri-food value chain. In randomly selected villages within our primary study areas, a brief farmer survey was used to identify intermediary actors they had sold commodities to in the last 30 days. These identified intermediaries were then contacted and interviewed using a more comprehensive survey. In Bangladesh, 280 rice farmers and 254 potato farmers participated in the farmer surveys. For the midstream actors, the sample includes 1,066 traders, 456 processors, and 220 wholesalers in the rice value chain, and 1,117 traders, 1 processor, 235 wholesalers, and 1 aggregator in the potato value chain.

A&T Bangladesh Urban Maternal Nutrition Endline Survey 2022: Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) Case Observation

This dataset is the result of the Case Observation survey that was conducted to gather data for the endline part of the impact evaluation study of the Alive & Thrive (A&T) interventions delivered through the Urban Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) Services in Bangladesh. These include building capacity for health providers and nutritional counselors in urban health clinics, creating friendly environment for maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) counseling in clinic settings, community mobilization for demand creation of MIYCN services, interpersonal counseling on diet during pregnancy and consumption of iron-folic acid (IFA) and calcium, promotion of adequate weight-gain monitoring during pregnancy, and counseling on breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices.
A&T is a global initiative that supports the scaling up of nutrition interventions to save lives, prevent illnesses, and contribute to healthy growth and development through improved maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, and complementary feeding practices. Using a quasi-experimental design, the primary objectives of the A&T evaluation study in Bangladesh are to answer the following questions:
1. What are the impacts of standardized and upgraded MIYCN counseling services on the behaviors of clients including pregnant women and mothers of children?
2. Is it feasible to standardize the delivery of MIYCN counseling services in existing urban health facilities?
3. Can the quality of MIYCN counseling services be improved by upgrading and standardizing existing MIYCN counseling services in urban health facilities?
4. What are the impacts of standardized and upgraded MIYCN counseling services on the utilization of MIYCN services?
The endline survey used 16 facilities in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with a non-random assignment of facilities to the intervention and control groups. Eight facilities from two NGOs of Radda and Marie Stopes received the intervention, while eight facilities operated by Nari Maitree and Shimantik served as the comparison group. The survey took place in May-July 2022 by the team from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in collaboration with the survey firm, DATA (Data Analysis and Technical Assistance). The endline survey comprised four questionnaires: 1) health facility assessment; 2) healthcare provider survey; 3) case observations and 4) client interviews. The survey took place in May-July 2022 by the team from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in collaboration with the survey firm, DATA (Data Analysis and Technical Assistance). The endline survey comprised four questionnaires: 1) health facility assessment; 2) healthcare provider survey; 3) case observations and 4) client interviews. The healthcare provider survey was conducted with different types of health providers including physicians or medical officers, nurses, counselors, paramedics, and community workers. Modules for the provider questionnaire included provider characteristics, workload and time commitments, services provided, exposure to training, knowledge, motivation, and self-efficacy.

CEDIL Work-in-Freedom 2 Bangladesh Migration Dataset

This survey is part of a broader evaluation study that supports the Foreign Commonwealth and Development office, United Kingdom (formerly DFID) funded program Work in Freedom Phase 2 (WiF-2), the International Labor Organization (ILO) has implemented between 2018 and 2023. WiF-2 aims "to reduce vulnerability to trafficking and forced labor of women and girls across migration pathways leading to the care sector and textiles, clothing, leather and footwear industries (TCLFI) of South Asia and the Arab States" (TOC WiF-2). Forced migration includes deceptive or coercive recruitment, abuse of vulnerable situations, exploitative conditions of work, coercion at the destination, and abuse of vulnerability at the destination. The program aims to reach at least 350,000 women and girls at source in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and at destinations in Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon, and Jordan. This survey is aimed to quantify the women's migration dynamics, migration-related decision-making, and empowerment. We collected information about female migrants and their spouses (or other influential family members) to assess the risk of forced labor and trafficking along the migration pathway and the impact of WiF interventions to date. In addition to assessing the impact of WiF-2 programs, information from the survey is being used to establish an innovating Women's Empowerment in Migration Index (WEMI) to measure women's ability (due to WiF2's intervention) to make decisions about entering/staying/leaving exploitative work conditions. The survey was conducted in six districts of Bangladesh identified as migration-prone where the International Labor Organization project had been active, including Narayanganj, Kishoreganj, Dhaka, Brahmanbaria, Gazipur and Faridpur from May to June 2022. It is important to highlight that the survey was purposive, non-probability samples targeting experienced, potential and non-migrants. The results are not generalizable to a larger population, as the sampling was created in the context of programme evaluation.

CEDIL Work-in-Freedom 2 Bangladesh Migration COVID-19 Dataset

This structured phone survey has been conducted to quantitatively assess the impact of COVID-19 on female labor migrants from the central-eastern districts of Bangladesh, where ILO has been implementing its Work in Freedom phase two (WiF22) since 2019. The WiF-2 program focuses on women migrants in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Jordan and Lebanon. The survey will guide our understanding of the COVID-19-related risks and options available for female potential migrants and migrant returnees. The survey collected information about migrant women’s overall recent migration experience and their perception about how the spread of the virus have affected their present and future migration plans.

A&T Bangladesh Urban Maternal Nutrition Baseline Survey 2020: Health Facility Assessment

This dataset is the result of the health facility assessment survey that was conducted to gather data for the baseline part of the impact evaluation study of the Alive & Thrive (A&T) interventions delivered through the Urban Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) Services in Bangladesh. These include building capacity for health providers and nutritional counselors in urban health clinics, creating a friendly environment for maternal infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) counseling in clinic settings, community mobilization for demand creation of MIYCN services, interpersonal counseling on diet during pregnancy and consumption of iron folic acid (IFA) and calcium, promotion of adequate weight-gain monitoring during pregnancy, and counseling on breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices. A&T is a global initiative that supports the scaling up of nutrition interventions to save lives, prevent illnesses, and contribute to healthy growth and development through improved maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, and complementary feeding practices. Using a quasi-experimental design, the primary objectives of the A&T evaluation study in Bangladesh are to answer the following questions: 1) Is it feasible to standardize the delivery of MIYCN counseling services in existing urban health facilities? 2) Can the quality of MIYCN counseling services be improved by upgrading and standardizing existing MIYCN counseling services in urban health facilities? 3) What are the impacts of standardized and upgraded MIYCN counseling services on the utilization of MIYCN services? 4) What are the impacts of standardized and upgraded MIYCN counseling service on the knowledge and behaviors of clients including: 4.1) Pregnant women: 1) consumption of diversified foods; 2) intake of IFA and calcium supplements during pregnancy 4.2) Mothers of children <1 y: age-appropriate infant feeding The baseline survey used 24 facilities in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with a non-random assignment of facilities to the intervention and control groups. Eight facilities from two NGOs of Radda and Marie Stopes received the intervention, while sixteen facilities operated by Nari Maitree and Shimantik served as the comparison group. The survey took place in October 2019 and February-March 2020 by the team from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in collaboration with the survey firm, DATA (Data Management and Technical Assistance). The baseline survey comprised four questionnaires: 1) health facility assessment; 2) provider survey; 3) case observations and 4) client interviews. The health facility assessment contained modules related to facility infrastructure, services provided to women and children, service readiness, caseload, and availability of trained providers.

Replication Data for "Designing for Empowerment Impact in Agricultural Development Projects"

The dataset consists of the replication files from the analysis of the empowerment impact of the Agriculture, Gender, and Nutrition Linkages (ANGeL) project in Bangladesh. ANGeL was a cluster-randomized controlled trial implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Bangladesh, with IFPRI as its evaluation partner. ANGeL aimed to assess interventions that can leverage agricultural growth to increase farm household incomes, improve nutrition, and enhance women’s empowerment in Bangladesh. There were three types of interventions: (1 ) Agriculture Production: Facilitating the production of the high-value food commodities that are rich in essential nutrients; (2) Nutrition Knowledge: Conducting high-quality behavior change communication (BCC) to improve the nutrition knowledge of women and men; (3) Gender Sensitization: Undertaking gender sensitization activities that lead to the improvement in the status/empowerment of women and gender parity between women and men. We implemented a clustered randomized controlled trial with the following arms: T-A: Agricultural Production training; T-N: Nutrition Behavior Change Communication (BCC); T-AN: Agricultural Production training and Nutrition BCC; T-ANG: Agricultural Production training, Nutrition BCC, and Gender Sensitization; and C: Control. Details on sampling can be found in Quisumbing et al. (2021) [https://doi.org/10.1016/j.worlddev.2021.105622]. Baseline data were collected between November 2015 and January 2016. Endline data were collected between January and March 2018. In each household, both the primary female beneficiary and primary male beneficiary were interviewed. Although the male and female beneficiaries were interviewed separately, some modules were answered by only the male (e.g., household demographics, assets and wealth, agricultural production, non-food consumption, and expenditures), some were answered by only the female (e.g., food consumption and food security indicators, dietary data, anthropometry, women’s status and decision-making autonomy, the experience of IPV), and some were answered separately by each (e.g., data needed to construct the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI), gender attitudes, time preferences, agency). Several modules related to empowerment, gender attitudes, IPV, and experience with the program were administered only at endline. In the case of empowerment, the pro-WEAI (Malapit et al. 2019) [https://doi.org/10.1111/dpr.12374] was administered at endline but was not available at baseline as it was still under development; instead, at baseline, the abbreviated WEAI (A-WEAI, see Malapit et al. 2017) [http://ebrary.ifpri.org/cdm/ref/collection/p15738coll2/id/131231] was fielded. Questions on gender attitudes and IPV were motivated in part by the Nurturing Connections curriculum, which was made available after baseline, thus were included only at endline.

2018 Social Accounting Matrix for Bangladesh

The Nexus Project is a collaboration between IFPRI and its partners, including national statistical agencies and research institutions. Our aim is to improve the quality of social accounting matrices (SAMs) used for computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling. The Nexus Project develops toolkits and establishes common data standards, procedures, and classification systems for constructing and updating national SAMs. The 2018 Bangladesh SAM follows the Standard Nexus Structure. The open access version of the Bangladesh SAM separates domestic production into 42 activities. Factors are disaggregated into labor, agricultural land, and capital. Labor is further disaggregated across three education categories. Representative households are disaggregated by rural and urban areas and by per capita expenditure quintile. The remaining accounts include enterprises, government, taxes, savings-and-investment, and the rest of the word.

Bangladesh Alive & Thrive Process Evaluation Survey 2013: Shasthya Kormi (SK)

This dataset is the result of the frontline health worker (FLW) survey conducted to gather data for a process evaluation as a part of an impact evaluation study of Alive & Thrive (A&T) interventions delivered through Building Resources Across Communities' (BRAC) Essential Health Care (EHC) Program in Bangladesh. The objective of the impact evaluation study is to evaluate the synergistic impact of A&T’s community component along with media communications and private sector activities such as the promotion and integration of micronutrient powders. A&T is a six-year initiative to facilitate change for improved infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices at scale in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Viet Nam. The goal of A&T is to reduce avoidable death and disability due to suboptimal IYCF in the developing world by increasing exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) until 6 months of age and reducing stunting of children 0-24 months of age. In Bangladesh, A&T is working with the government, nongovernmental organizations, and private initiatives to support the implementation of the National IYCF Strategy and Action Plan. The BRAC organization is delivering A&T’s community interventions within its EHC Program and its Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (MNCH) Program. BRAC’s frontline health workers, known as Shasthya Shebika and Shasthya Kormi, delivered age-appropriate IYCF counseling and support services during home visits, antenatal and postnatal sessions, and health forums. The process evaluation survey conducted as part of the impact evaluation of A&T interventions delivered through BRAC’s EHC platform had two components—(i) household survey, and (ii) frontline health workers survey. The household survey captured the main impact indicators for A&T (WHO-recommended IYCF indicators and child anthropometry), use and exposure to A&T’s intervention platforms, and a variety of other data related to the use of the interventions. This included data on caregiver knowledge and perceptions about IYCF practices, challenges experienced in relation to IYCF practices, caregiver resources (such as education, childcare knowledge, and experience, and physical and mental health) and household resources (such as household composition, socioeconomic status, and food security). Three questionnaires were developed for frontline health workers survey—(i) Shasthya Shebika (SS) questionnaire, (ii) Shasthya Kormi (SK) questionnaire, and (iii) Pushti Kormi questionnaire. The data included here are from the survey of Shasthya Kormi. The survey was conducted in the 25 upazilas across 13 districts in Bangladesh between April and August 2013 by the IFPRI team in collaboration with Data Analysis and Technical Assistance, Ltd. Feed the Future Bangladesh Phase One Zone of Influence (ZOI) Endline Survey, 2018-2019

The Feed the Future Phase One Zone of Influence (ZOI) Endline Survey was implemented by IFPRI through Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS) 2018-2019. Data collection in the Feed the Future ZOI stratum took place in 20 districts in southern Bangladesh, which is divided between three divisions—that is, Barishal, Khulna, and part of the Dhaka Division—from November 2018 to February 2019. The endline survey followed the same households as the baseline, making the baseline Feed the Future ZOI Survey data directly comparable to the endline Feed the Future ZOI Survey data. Therefore, the panel format of the dataset means the economic progress of these households between 2011/2012 and 2018/2019 can be assessed. The total number of households included in Feed the Future ZOI is 2064 and is representative of Feed the Future ZOI.

A&T Bangladesh Maternal Nutrition Endline Survey 2016: Shasthya Shebika (SS)

This dataset is the result of the frontline health worker (FHW) survey conducted to gather data for the Maternal Nutrition Endline as a part of an impact evaluation study of Alive & Thrive (A&T) interventions delivered through Building Resources Across Communities' (BRAC) Essential Health Care (EHC) Program in Bangladesh. A&T is a global initiative that supports the scaling up of nutrition interventions to save lives, prevent illnesses, and contribute to healthy growth and development through improved maternal nutrition, breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices. In setting its country program goal for Bangladesh in this phase of its study, A&T decided to focus on demonstrating the feasibility of integrating a package of maternal nutrition interventions in a large-scale Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) program. Maternal nutrition should receive equal priority as child nutrition and the A&T program of BRAC already have developed an effective strategy through improving IYCF practices. The objective of this impact evaluation is to assess the impact of integrating nutrition-focused behavior change communication (BCC- interpersonal counselling and mass communication) and community mobilization into BRAC's rural MNCH program on: 1) coverage and utilization of key maternal nutrition interventions; 2) consumption of diversified and adequate amount of foods and micronutrients by pregnant and postpartum women; and 3) early breastfeeding practices. In addition, factors affecting integration of nutrition interventions into a well-established community-based MNCH program platform through frontline health workers and social mobilization were examined. The study used a cluster-randomized design with repeated cross-sectional surveys at baseline and endline. As with the baseline, the endline survey used the same ten subdistricts from four districts (Mymensingh, Rangpur, Kurigram, and Lalmonirhat) in which BRAC's existing rural MNCH project is in place have been selected randomly to provide intensified maternal nutrition interventions. Another 10 subdisctricts/upazilas from the same four districts have been selected as comparison for the evaluation. It was conducted between July–August 2016 by the team from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in collaboration with the survey firm, Data Analysis and Technical Assistance, Ltd. Data were also gathered on health workers’ time commitment, knowledge and attitude and training related to maternal nutrition, and their job motivation, satisfaction, and supervision. In addition, questions on household assets and mass media habits were included. Two questionnaires were developed for frontline health workers survey—(i) Shasthya Shebika (SS) questionnaire, and (ii) Shasthya Kormi (SK) questionnaire. This included data on caregiver knowledge and perceptions about maternal nutrition, caregiver resources (such as education, physical and mental health, decisionmaking power and domestic violence) and household resources (such as household composition, socioeconomic status, and food security). The husband questionnaire provided data on husband’s knowledge of maternal nutrition during wife’s pregnancy, and husband’s practices to support his wife to have optimal nutrition during pregnancy.

A&T Bangladesh Maternal Nutrition Endline Survey 2016: Households - Pregnant Women

This dataset is the result of the household/pregnant women (PW) survey conducted to gather data for the Maternal Nutrition Endline as a part of an impact evaluation study of Alive & Thrive (A&T) interventions delivered through Building Resources Across Communities' (BRAC) Essential Health Care (EHC) Program in Bangladesh. Maternal nutrition should receive equal priority as child nutrition and the A&T program of BRAC already have developed an effective strategy through improving IYCF practices. The objective of this impact evaluation is to assess the impact of integrating nutrition-focused behavior change communication (BCC- interpersonal counselling and mass communication) and community mobilization into BRAC's rural MNCH program on: 1) coverage and utilization of key maternal nutrition interventions; 2) consumption of diversified and adequate amount of foods and micronutrients by pregnant and postpartum women; and 3) early breastfeeding practices. In addition, factors affecting integration of nutrition interventions into a well-established community-based MNCH program platform through frontline health workers and social mobilization were examined. The study used a cluster-randomized design with repeated cross-sectional surveys at baseline and endline. Bangladesh Agricultural Value Chain (AVC) Impact Evaluation: Endline Survey

Funded under the Feed the Future (FTF) Initiative, the Bangladesh Agricultural Value Chains (AVC) project was implemented by Development Alternatives International (DAI) and strove to improve food and nutrition security through strengthened agricultural value chains. This dataset contains data from the final round of household survey interviews from the Impact Evaluation associated with the Bangladesh AVC project, which covered producer and input retailer households for two value chains. The sample is divided into five groups. Groups 1 through 3 refer to interviews along the jute value chain, while groups 4 and 5 refer to interviews along the mung bean value chain. Group 1 households are jute farmer households interviewed in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Group 2 households are jute farmer households interviewed in 2017 and 2018 (after expanding the original sample). Group 3 households are jute input retailers interviewed in 2017 and 2018. Group 4 households are mung bean farmer households interviewed in 2018. Group 5 households are mung bean input retailers interviewed in 2018. Households completed two interview forms. A household-level form was administered to all households and included questions on household characteristics, agricultural production, and input purchases (or sales). An individual-level form was administered to male and female respondents, and included questions on household demographics and consumption. Group 2 households also completed a series of modules as part of the Project-Level Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (Pro-WEAI).

US Global Food Security Strategy (GFSS) Baseline Survey, 2018-2019

The purpose of the US Global Food Security Strategy (GFSS) 2018/2019 baseline survey in Bangladesh is to provide the U.S. Government interagency partners, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Resilience and Food Security (RFS), USAID/Bangladesh, the Government of Bangladesh, and development partners with information on the current status of the Feed the Future Zone of Influence (ZOI)-level population-based survey indicators. The survey is designed to establish the current status of Feed the Future indicators in the ZOI for the second phase of Feed the Future, also known as GFSS. Upon request from USAID, IFPRI designed and conducted the US Global Food Security Strategy (GFSS) 2018/2019 baseline survey, which was implemented in the field from November 11, 2018 to February 6, 2019. The GFSS 2018/2019 baseline survey covers mostly rural areas in the south and southwest region of the country. In addition to the 20 districts in three divisions that create the Feed the Future sample, the GFSS sample added Kushtia district in Khulna division based on its poverty and stunting trends. The 21 districts making up the GFSS are listed below: 1. Barishal division (six districts): Barguna, Barishal, Bhola, Jhalakati, Patuakhali, and Pirojpur; 2. Dhaka division (five districts): Faridpur, Gopalganj, Madaripur, Rajbari, and Shariatpur; and 3. Khulna division (10 districts): Bagerhat, Chuadanga, Jashore, Jhenaidah, Khulna, Kushtia, Magura, Meherpur, Narail, and Satkhira. The GFSS sample includes 2,525 households in 125 primary sampling units (that is, villages). The GFSS sample design followed a stratified sampling in two stages: (1) randomly selected 125 PSUs (villages) with probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling using the number of households in each village as the size, and (2) after a complete census in each of the selected villages was conducted, randomly selected 20 households per PSU from the census list—using the sampling frame developed from the community series of the 2001 population census of Bangladesh.

This included data on caregiver knowledge and perceptions about maternal nutrition, caregiver resources (such as education, physical and mental health, decisionmaking power and domestic violence) and household resources (such as household composition, socioeconomic status, and food security). The husband questionnaire provided data on husband’s knowledge of maternal nutrition during wife’s pregnancy, and husband’s practices to support his wife to have optimal nutrition during pregnancy.

Bangladesh Alive & Thrive Process Evaluation Survey 2013: Shasthya Shebika (SS)

This dataset is the result of the frontline health worker (FLW) survey conducted to gather data for a process evaluation as a part of an impact evaluation study of Alive & Thrive (A&T) interventions delivered through Building Resources Across Communities' (BRAC) Essential Health Care (EHC) Program in Bangladesh. The objective of the impact evaluation study is to evaluate the synergistic impact of A&T’s community component along with media communications and private sector activities such as the promotion and integration of micronutrient powders. A&T is a six-year initiative to facilitate change for improved infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices at scale in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Viet Nam. The goal of A&T is to reduce avoidable death and disability due to suboptimal IYCF in the developing world by increasing exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) until 6 months of age and reducing stunting of children 0-24 months of age. In Bangladesh, A&T is working with the government, nongovernmental organizations, and private initiatives to support the implementation of the National IYCF Strategy and Action Plan. The BRAC organization is delivering A&T’s community interventions within its EHC Program and its Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (MNCH) Program. BRAC’s frontline health workers, known as Shasthya Shebika and Shasthya Kormi, delivered age-appropriate IYCF counseling and support services during home visits, antenatal and postnatal sessions, and health forums. Replication Data for "Food Transfers, Electronic Food Vouchers and Child Nutritional Status Among Rohingya Children Living in Bangladesh"

This dataset is a cleaned subset of a household survey conducted in and around the Rohingya settlement camps in Southeastern Bangladesh. The data underlines the study “Food transfers, electronic food vouchers and child nutritional status among Rohingya children living in Bangladesh." It includes anthropometry of 523 children aged between 6 and 23 months in households receiving either a food ration consisting of rice, pulses, vegetable oil (362 children) or an e-voucher (161 children) that could be used to purchase 19 different foods. In addition, this dataset also provides information on the characteristics of the mothers and the households in which they lived, including household demographics, consumption and expenditure, coping strategies, livelihoods and income profiles, and access to assistance.

A&T Bangladesh Maternal Nutrition Baseline Survey 2015: Households - Pregnant Women

This dataset is the result of the household/pregnant women (PW) survey conducted to gather data for the Maternal Nutrition Baseline as a part of an impact evaluation study of Alive & Thrive (A&T) interventions delivered through Building Resources Across Communities' (BRAC) Essential Health Care (EHC) Program in Bangladesh. A&T is a global initiative that supports the scaling up of nutrition interventions to save lives, prevent illnesses, and contribute to healthy growth and development through improved maternal nutrition, breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices. In setting its country program goal for Bangladesh in this phase of its study, A&T decided to focus on demonstrating the feasibility of integrating a package of maternal nutrition interventions in a large-scale Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) program. Maternal nutrition should receive equal priority as child nutrition and the A&T program of BRAC already have developed an effective strategy through improving IYCF practices. The objective of this impact evaluation is to assess the impact of integrating nutrition-focused behavior change communication (BCC- interpersonal counselling and mass communication) and community mobilization into BRAC's rural MNCH program on: 1) coverage and utilization of key maternal nutrition interventions; 2) consumption of diversified and adequate amount of foods and micronutrients by pregnant and postpartum women; and 3) early breastfeeding practices. In addition, factors affecting integration of nutrition interventions into a well-established community-based MNCH program platform through frontline health workers and social mobilization were examined. The study used a cluster-randomized design with repeated cross-sectional surveys at baseline and endline. Ten subdistricts from four districts (Mymensingh, Rangpur, Kurigram, and Lalmonirhat) in which BRAC's existing rural MNCH project is in place have been selected randomly to provide intensified maternal nutrition interventions. Another 10 subdisctricts/upazilas from the same four districts have been selected as comparison for the evaluation. Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS) 2018-2019

This is the third round of the Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS). BIHS is the only nationally representative survey in Bangladesh that collects detailed data on (1) plot-level agricultural production and practices, (2) dietary intake of individual household members, (3) anthropometric measurements (height and weight) of all household members, and (4) data to measure women’s empowerment in agriculture index (WEAI). A community survey supplements the BIHS data to provide information on area-specific contextual factors. The BIHS covers 5604 households in 325 primary sampling units. The sample is statistically representative at the following levels: (a) nationally representative of rural Bangladesh; and (b) representative of rural areas of each of the seven administrative divisions of the country: Barisal, Chittagong, Dhaka, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Sylhet.

Data were also gathered on health worker time commitment, knowledge and attitude and training related to IYCF, and their job motivation, satisfaction, and supervision. Three questionnaires were developed for frontline health workers survey—(i) Shasthya Shebika (SS) questionnaire, (ii) Shasthya Kormi (SK) questionnaire, and (iii) Pushti Kormi questionnaire. The data included here are from the survey of Shasthya Kormi. The survey was conducted in the 20 upazilas across 10 districts in Bangladesh between April and June 2014 by the IFPRI team in collaboration with Data Analysis and Technical Assistance, Ltd. (DATA).

A&T Bangladesh Follow-up Survey 2016: Community

This dataset is the result of the follow-up community survey conducted in 2016 to collect data on the sustained impacts of A&T’s behavior change communication interventions on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in Bangladesh which include: 1) Sustained impact on IYCF practices and knowledges, 2) Expansion of program exposure and promoted practices into new areas, and 3) Diffusion of IYCF information. A&T is a global initiative that supports the scaling up of nutrition interventions to save lives, prevent illnesses, and contribute to healthy growth and development through improved maternal nutrition, breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices. During Phase 1 (A&T-1, 2009-2014), A&T Bangladesh were designed to support improvements in IYCF primarily by improving policy and regulatory environments (advocacy) and shaping IYCF demand and practice (community-based interventions and mass media). In 2014, IFPRI in collaboration with Data Analysis and Technical Assistance (DATA) conducted the endline survey. The overall findings of the impact evaluation indicated that A&T’s work in Bangladesh is a remarkable success story of scaling up what has been challenging to date in the field of nutrition: complex, high intensity and at-scale behavior change communication interventions. Since the termination of A&T-1 project support in 2014, BRAC has continued to deliver interpersonal counseling on IYCF through its cadres of frontline health workers to over 90% of the country (456 out of 490 upazilas) with the support of other external donor funds, with several additional modifications (e.g. added focus on maternal nutrition, less frequent training and supervision, and reduced performance based incentives). In 2016, a follow-up study was conducted to examine the sustained impact on IYCF practices, expansion of program exposure and promoted practices into new areas, and diffusion of IYCF information. Because achievements related to service delivery and outcomes were intended to be sustained in the A&T-1 intensive areas and later expanded to other areas where BRAC’s Essential Health Care program operates, including the A&T-1 comparison or non-intensive areas (described further in the next section), the study aimed to examine elements in both the original A&T intensive and A&T non-intensive areas. The follow-up survey consisted of two questionnaires: 1) community, and 2) household/mother survey and was conducted between April and June of 2016. A census form was applied to each village in order to capture administrative information on household location, household composition, and literacy and main occupations of all household members. The form also identified households with children 0-24 months of age, to generate the on-site household sampling list. The follow-up study was conducted in the same 20 rural subdistricts using a similar design to the original impact evaluation design. The purpose of the community questionnaire was to gather data on underlying factors at the community level, for comparing the different clusters over time. The community questionnaire captured the factors influencing suboptimal feeding practices that are embedded within the larger society and environment. Specifically, the community questionnaire was designed to provide information on the following aspects of each village: 1) General characteristics: population, proportions of minority and poor households, main sources of income in peak and low seasons, 2) Infrastructure: access to main road, electricity, gas, and irrigation systems, 3) Distance to/from the nearest major town, types of transportation used to reach this town, 4) Natural disasters occurred in the village during the last year, and 5) Presence of organizations or support groups and nutrition programs/projects.

Households with children 6-23.9 months of age for assessing complementary feeding (CF) practices: 600 in intervention and 600 in comparison areas. Thus, a total of 2400 households were included in the follow-up study. In each household, the mother of the index child was the primary respondent of the survey.

HarvestPlus Bangladesh Bio-fortified Rice Project: Baseline Dietary Survey

A multi-stage cluster survey was conducted in two rural rice-producing regions in Bangladesh in 2007-2008 as the initial project of a HarvestPlus multi-stage research program to determine the potential impact of zinc-biofortified rice on the zinc and health status among children in Bangladesh who are at risk of zinc deficiency. In each region, 240 children ages 24-48 months were enrolled. Dietary information was collected primarily by direct observation and weighing of food preparation and consumption, including test weighing of milk intakes by breast-fed children. Height and weight were measured in all children, and in a subset of children, blood samples were collected and analyzed for concentrations of serum zinc and indicators of infection.

Bangladesh Agricultural Value Chain (AVC) Impact Evaluation: Midline Survey

Funded under the Feed the Future (FTF) Initiative, the Bangladesh Agricultural Value Chains (AVC) project being implemented by Development Alternatives International (DAI) is working to improve food (and nutrition) security through strengthened agricultural value chains. This dataset contains data from the second round of household survey interviews from the impact evaluation of the Bangladesh AVC project. The dataset contains three respondent groups. Group 1 households are jute farmer households who were previously interviewed in 2016. Group 2 households are jute farmer households added to the sample at midline (2017). Group 3 households are local jute input retailers. The dataset contains information on: household composition and socio-demographic characteristics of household members; agricultural production (including jute, other crops, input & labor usage, and agricultural practices used; relations with other value chain actors (input sellers); and household assets and expenditures on food and non-food items.

ASTI Bangladesh Database

This dataset includes national-level time series data on researcher capacity by qualification level, age bracket, discipline mix, and commodity, as well as a detailed breakdown of agricultural research investment across government, higher education, nonprofit, and (where possible) private for-profit agricultural research agencies. These data were derived through a series of primary survey rounds conducted by IFPRI’s Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) and in close collaboration with a large network of national collaborators. The ASTI data constitute a powerful resource for national and regional research managers, policymakers, donor organizations, and other stakeholders. ASTI’s key indicators provide both a diagnostic tool for assessing the allocation and use of existing resources and an advocacy tool for increasing resources and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of resource use. CCAFS-IMPACT Lite Survey Bangladesh, Satkhira District

IMPACT lite is a tool, developed by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) that provides a unifying framework for collecting detailed information on farm resources, farm management strategies, farm productivity and household economics at the household-level. The objective of this survey is to capture within-site variability on key livelihood indicators that could be used for a range of analysis including the modelling of impact of adaptation and mitigation strategies on livelihoods, food security and the environment. The survey was carried out in 13 other benchmark sites across East Africa, West Africa, and South Asia. IMPACT Lite data from Satkhira, Bangladesh were collected by IFPRI as part of the IFPRI-CCAFS Gender and Climate Change Survey Data.

The IFPRI-CCAFS Gender and Climate Change Survey data were collected between April and May 2013 as part of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) under the project "Increasing Women’s Resilience to Confront Climate Change." It aimed to enhance understanding of gendered climate change perceptions, impacts, adaptation, and coping strategies, as well as the constraints to adaptation within two CCAFS research sites in Bangladesh, Bagerhat and Satkhira. Data were collected on the three previous agricultural seasons, that is, from August 2011 to August 2012. The survey covered the same households that were sampled for the IMPACT Lite surveys, designed by researchers at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in order to supplement the detailed productivity-related information collected through that survey. Gender-disaggregated data were gathered on climate change perceptions, agricultural activities, decision-making, weather information, risk perceptions, and adaptation. Information was also collected on assets, farming decisions, agricultural practices, respondents’ access to information, extension services, and credit; and their participation in community groups. Data were gathered through the use of questionnaires administered through face-to-face interviews. Two adult decision makers (one male and one female) were interviewed separately per household in order to capture independent perceptions.

Bangladesh Agricultural Value Chain (AVC) Impact Evaluation: Baseline Survey

Funded under the Feed the Future (FTF) Initiative, the Bangladesh Agricultural Value Chains (AVC) project being implemented by Development Alternatives International (DAI) is working to improve food (and nutrition) security through strengthened agricultural value chains. The dataset comprises information gathered from a baseline survey of farmer households in rural districts in southern Bangladesh. The sample was composed of 1,000 households primarily growing a food crop (mung bean) and 1,000 household growing a non-food crop (jute). The survey collected information on: demographics; agricultural production and marketing; assets, expenditures and consumption, and women’s empowerment in agriculture.

Social Dynamics of Short-Term Variability in Key Measures of Household and Community Wellbeing in Rural Bangladesh

More frequent data collection, especially when coupled with shorter recall periods, may produce more inclusive reporting, improved capture of intra-seasonal variability, and earlier signals of events that may merit policy or other forms of development intervention. Although there have been survey efforts that have collected a small number of data from rural households on the moderately high basis, to date there have been no significant efforts to collect a broad range of data from rural households with high frequency. The data included in this study was collected through the smartphone-based data collection technique that allowed participants to submit data at various frequencies and with various recall periods, thereby permitting the analysis of the relative merits of more frequent data streams. This study captured data from 480 farmers of northwestern Bangladesh over approximately one year of continuous data on key measures of household and community well-being that could be particularly useful for the design and evaluation of development interventions and policies. While the data discussed here provide a snapshot of what is possible, we also highlight their strength for providing opportunities for interdisciplinary research in the household agricultural production, practices, seasonal hunger, etc., in a low-income agrarian society.

The 2007-2008 HarvestPlus Bangladesh Biofortified Rice Project Food Intake Dataset

A multi-stage cluster survey was conducted in two rural rice-producing regions in Bangladesh in 2007-8 as the initial project of a HarvestPlus multi-stage research program to determine the potential impact of zinc-biofortified rice on the zinc and health status among children in Bangladesh who are at risk of zinc deficiency. The project protocol “Assessment of rice intakes and total dietary zinc intakes in rural Bangladesh” was conducted in collaboration with the University of California, Davis and the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B). In each region, 240 children ages 24-48 months and their primary female caregiver were enrolled. Dietary information was collected primarily by direct observation and weighing of food preparation and consumption, including test weighing of milk intakes by breast-fed children. Height and weight were measured in all children and women, and in a subset of children, blood samples were collected and analyzed for concentrations of serum zinc and indicators of infection.

BIHS Harmonized Dataset

This dataset is was created by re-compiling available open, gender/sex-disaggregated Feed the Future datasets for Bangladesh and applying standard processing methods to enhance their accessibility and interoperability. This process entailed the standardization of variable names and labels, the creation of derived socio-economic indicators such as dietary diversity scores, household dependency ratios, and household age and gender composition. This dataset allows researchers to easily use data for Bangladesh, as well as make cross country comparisons with other standardized datasets. Moreover, the provision of household GIS coordinates (offset for confidentiality purposes) allows users to match data at different levels. This work combines multi-topic household and community socio-economic and agricultural surveys with biophysical datasets from multiple sources, including remote sensing, for a thorough comparison of different phenomena. These biophysical sources include the International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC) World Soil Information, NASA MODIS vegetation indices and land surface temperature data, and the HarvestChoice spatially-disaggregated subnational crop production statistics database (Spatial Production Allocation Model; SPAM).

Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS) 2015

Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) Pilot II for Bangladesh

The Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) is a composite measurement tool that indicates women’s control over critical parts of their lives in the household, community, and economy. It allows us to identify women who are disempowered and understand how to increase autonomy and decisionmaking in key domains. The WEAI is also a useful tool for tracking progress toward gender equality, which is one of the Millennium Development Goals. The WEAI measures the empowerment, agency, and inclusion of women in the agriculture sector in an effort to identify ways to overcome those obstacles and constraints. The Index is a significant innovation in its field and aims to increase understanding of the connections between women’s empowerment, food security, and agricultural growth. The Uganda pilot covered five spatially dispersed rural districts in the northern region (Amuru and Kole), central region (Luwero and Masaka), and eastern region (Iganga). The second pilot was conducted to develop and test a revised version of WEAI in the same districts as the original pilot. Sample villages were randomly assigned to receive either the original (1.1) or revised (2.0) versions of the questionnaire.

Bangladesh Climate Change Adaptation Survey (BCCAS), Round II

The Bangladesh Climate Change Adaptation Survey (BCCAS), Round II is a follow up survey to BCCAS, Round I. About 97.34 percent of households from BCCAS I were reinterviewed in 2012. The survey captures information on demographic characteristics, social capital, land tenure, crop and livestock management, input use, extension, incidence of climatic shocks in the last five years and adaptation options and if there are any changes from 2010 survey. . The survey was conducted from September to October 2012, covering data from the previous production year. Gender Household Survey

The purpose of this survey is to gather gender-disaggregated data on agricultural activities, decision-making, weather information, risk-perception and values from rural households in Kenya, Bangladesh, Uganda and Senegal. The survey ultimately will cover 200 households in each site - the same households that were sampled for the IMPACT Lite Surveys. This survey builds on the information collected in that round, supplementing the detailed productivity related information with data on decision-making and other topics. This information will be used for researchers, policy-makers and development practitioners to better understand the vulnerabilities of men and women to climate change, how they differ, and what actions can be taken to reduce that vulnerability.

Impact Evaluation of the DFID Programme to Accelerate Improved Nutrition of the Extreme Poor in Bangladesh

Undernutrition is widespread in Bangladesh. In 2011, according to the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey, 41.3 per cent of children under age five were stunted, 36.4 per cent were underweight, 15.6 per cent were wasted, and more than 50 per cent were anaemic. Prevalences were even higher among extremely poor households. Meanwhile, evidence from South Asia shows that high rates of economic growth and reduction in poverty have not led to similarly large reductions in undernutrition (see 1, 2, 3). These findings have suggested that improvements in income alone may not be sufficient to improve nutritional status. Extensive research has also shown that the critical window for nutritional interventions is during the "first thousand days" of life (see 4, 5), from the time when a child is in utero until about two years of age. Based on this accumulated evidence, growing attention has come to introducing nutrition interventions that target children's "first thousand days" alongside household poverty reduction programmes. In particular, there has been growing emphasis on nutrition interventions that aim to improve infant and young child feeding practices—through increasing nutritional knowledge of women who are pregnant, lactating, or likely to be pregnant in the future—as well as to improve the nutritional status of these women themselves.

Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) Baseline Household Survey 2010-2011

The Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) was launched in 2009 with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). CSISAâs objective is to develop and deploy more efficient, productive and sustainable technologies for the diverse rice-wheat production systems of the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) that ultimately improve food supply and improve the livelihoods of the poor in the region. CSISA builds on previous collaborative efforts (notably the Rice-Wheat Consortium, RWC) by bringing IRRI and CIMMYT together with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and the WorldFish Center to accelerate sustainable intensification of cereal productivity growth in South Asia and to improve the poverty impacts of such growth. CSISAâs vision is to decrease hunger and malnutrition and to increase food and income security for resource-poor farm households in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan through the accelerated development and inclusive deployment of new and improved crop varieties, sustainable technologies and management practices, and improved policies. CSISA activities are based on a âhub approachâ, which emphasizes the role of a central innovation and delivery center from which activities are directed. Hubs serve as unique platforms for integrating scientific research into on-farm trials with the help of partners from government and private sector organizations. The hubs are created to provide farmers with a complete range of quality inputs, objective technical guidance, easy crop financing, and direct output linkages for farmers. Hub scientists focus on a suite of technologies geared toward sustainable increases in cereal productivity and farm income. Transfer Modality Research Initiative - Bangladesh (TMRI)

This is a randomized control trial in two zones of Bangladesh (north and south). Treatment is assigned at the village level where treatments are: cash transfers (north and south); cash transfers + nutrition behavior communication change (north only); food transfers (north and south); food transfers + nutrition behavior communication change (south only); food-cash split (north and south); and controls (north and south). Within treatment localities, women living in very poor households are targeted to receive benefits for two years.

Chronic Poverty and Long Term Impact Study in Bangladesh

The Chronic Poverty and Long Term Impact Study in Bangladesh project, which focuses on 102 villages characteristic of rural Bangladesh, aims to further our understanding of the economic, social and political processes that shape chronic poverty in Bangladesh together with the impact of selected anti-poverty interventions on poverty dynamics. After initial community level fieldwork approximately 1,907 core households first surveyed in 1994, 1996, or 2000 were interviewed in late 2006 to ascertain how their living standards, endowment and other characteristics have changed over time and what role selected interventions have had on their welfare trajectories. 365 households who had split from their original households were also interviewed Detailed life-histories were then collected from a stratified sub-sample of approximately 293 adult men and women living in 161 households in order to better understand which events, institutions and processes have trapped certain households in chronic poverty while allowing others to escape from it. By analysing the results of the community level focus groups, panel survey and life-histories interviews together, a much fuller and more nuanced understanding of chronic poverty and the impact of the selected interventions is produced. The panel survey component of the study builds on evaluation studies on the provision of Food or Cash for Education (FFE/CFE) to poor families; production-related interventions, through the introduction of new agricultural technologies; and microfinance, through Non-Governmental organizations (NGOs). This webpage presents the combined dataset of all the three individual datasets for each study. The Food for Education (FFE) survey was conducted in Bangladesh in 2000 and 2003 to evaluate the effect of a conditional transfer of food or cash to poor families, which was designed to increase school attendance. In 2000, the survey covered 600 households in 60 villages in 30 unions in 10 thanas, and 110 schools in the same 30 unions from which the household sample was drawn. In 2003, two thanas were dropped from the sample, reducing the sample size to 480 households and the number of thanas to 8. In 2006/7, there were 511 households from 8 upazilas (the new name for thana). The Micronutrients-Gender study, also known as the Agricultural Technology Study, was carried out in 1996-1997 to evaluate the micronutrient/gender impact of new agricultural technologies being disseminated by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) through a variety of targeting mechanisms in three sites in rural Bangladesh: improved vegetables (Saturia); individual fishponds (Mymensingh); and group fishponds (Jessore). The survey covered 330 households in three categories in each site: NGO-member adopting households, NGO-member likely adopter households in villages where the technology was not yet introduced, and a sampling of all other households in both types of villages to represent the general population. The Microfinance study was conducted in Bangladesh in 1994 to analyze the determinants of the formation of and participation in group-based rural financial institutions and the effects of participation on household resource allocation, income generation, and food and nonfood consumption. The study included a 120-village community level survey, 128 credit groups, and a household survey of 350 households in 7 villages. The study included credit groups formed by three Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)- Association for Social Advancement (ASA), Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), and Rangpur-Dinajpur Rural Services (RDRS). Household surveys were based on stratified random sampling, with household possession of land as the stratifier, irrespective of membership in NGO programs. The Impact Evaluation of Food for Education (FFE) survey was conducted in Bangladesh in 2000 to evaluate the effect of a conditional transfer of food to poor families that was designed to increase school attendance. The survey covered 600 households in 60 villages in 30 unions in 10 thanas, and 110 schools in the same 30 unions from which the household sample was drawn. Ten thanas were first randomly selected with probability proportional to size (PPS), based on thana-level population data from the 1991 census, and two FFE unions and one non-FFE union were selected per thana. From each union, two villages were randomly selected with PPS using village-level population data from the 1991 census. Because the focus of the FFE program was on economically disadvantaged areas, the sample of non-FFE unions was also selected from neighboring economically disadvantaged areas. This means that the subsequent sample cannot be regarded as representative of rural Bangladesh as a whole, but it does broadly characterize the conditions in the poorest upazilas in the country. A complete census of the households was then carried out in each of the selected villages, and ten households that had at least one primary-school-age child (6 to 12 years old) were randomly selected in each village from the census list of households. The Comparing Food versus Cash for Education survey was conducted in Bangladesh in 2003 to compare the effect of using food or cash as a conditional transfer, designed to increase school attendance, to poor households. The original survey, carried out in 2000 including Food for Education (FFE) program beneficiaries and nonbeneficiaries, covered 600 households in 60 villages in 30 unions in 10 thanas, and 110 schools in the same 30 unions from which the household sample was drawn. Ten thanas were first randomly selected with probability proportional to size (PPS), based on thana-level population data from the 1991 census, and two FFE unions and one non-FFE union were selected per thana. From each union, two villages were randomly selected with PPS using village-level population data from the 1991 census. A complete census of the households was then carried out in each of the selected villages, and ten households that had at least one primary-school-age child (6 to 12 years old) were randomly selected in each village from the census list of households. The Rural Finance and Food Security survey was conducted in Bangladesh in 1994 to analyze the determinants of the formation and participation in group-based rural financial institutions and the effects of participation on household resource allocation, income generation, and food and nonfood consumption. The community level survey covered 120 villages, and the household survey covered 1,181 individuals in 350 households in 7 villages in 5 thanas. The study included credit groups formed by three Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)- Association for Social Advancement (ASA), Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), and Rangpur-Dinajpur Rural Services (RDRS). Selection of respondents for the household surveys was based on stratified random sampling, with household possession of land as the stratifier, irrespective of membership in NGO programs. Household surveys focused on collecting data related to household composition, occupation, education, school participation, dwelling characteristics, assets, expenditures, food consumption, anthropometric measurements of women and children, and use of the Food for Education (FFE) system.

Impact of Behavior Change Communications and Market-based Approach to Delivering Micronutrient Powders on Stunting, Infant Feeding Practices and Anemia in Bangladesh

This study seeks to assess the acceptability, compliance, and preference for iron supplementation; micronutrient powders (MNP) versus iron syrup. Additionally, this study seeks to assess front line health worker perceptions and experiences regarding ease of implementation of each strategy and delivery strategy preference.

Bangladesh SHAHAR Dinajpur Baseline Survey, 2002-2003

The SHAHAR (Supporting Household Activities for Health, Assets and Revenue) project aims to increase incomes and improve unhygienic environments and sanitation conditions in poor urban communities, including slums, in major selected secondary cities in Bangladesh. Using relevant indicators namely socioeconomic; health and hygiene; nutrition and diet; and governance and social institutions the project provides insight into the livelihood conditions and the livelihood security of these slum households. The SHAHAR baseline survey was conducted in July to August, 2002 in slum (basti) communities in Dinajpur. The SHAHAR census survey suggested that only 52 percent of households had children under 5 years of age; doubling the sample size would ensure that the final sample would have at least this many households with children under 5 years of age. This gave an estimated sample size of 271 * 2 = 542. As slum dwellers are assumed to be highly mobile, and the losses would increase over the year between round I in July – August, 2002 and round III a year later, a substantial reserve was added to the sample, as well as some allowance for refusal or other non-response, for a final total of 614 households. The field survey was carried out by two teams, each consisting of three male and female pairs and a supervisor. One pair interviewed one household at a time, with the female interviewer interviewing the main female member of the household and collecting information on household composition, migration and education; training; savings; loans; food consumption; household food security; health; anthropometry and childcare; environment, water and sanitation; shocks and coping strategies; social capital; crime, violence, physical security; governance; and women’s status. The male interviewer interviewed the main male member of the household asking questions on language, religion, and migration; training; employment; transfers, social assistance and other income; household assets; land ownership and tenure; urban agriculture; savings; loans; housing; non food expenditure; shocks and coping strategies; social capital; crime, violence and physical security; and governance. The pairs on each team worked together to cover three households per day and the 614 households surveyed in approximately 39 days in July to August, 2002 in Dinajpur. Bangladesh, Baseline Data of SHAHAR Project, CARE-Bangladesh, 2000

The SHAHAR (Supporting Household Activities for Health, Assets and Revenue) project implemented by CARE-Bangladesh aims to establish household livelihood security for vulnerable urban households. Using relevant indicators, the project intends to assess changes in various household livelihood security measures that are expected due to SHAHAR's interventions. The information in the baseline dataset is meant to provide a basis for monitoring changes over the life of the project. The SHAHAR Baseline Survey was conducted in August 2000 in slums and low-income settlements within the municipal areas of Jessore and Tongi in Bangladesh. Households were selected randomly from a complete listing done as part of a census in the areas only a few months before. The sample size was chosen based on a desire to estimate the prevalence of malnutrition of children 0-60 months old with a confidence level of 90 percent and an error level of 5 percent (requiring a sample size of 271). Because only about half the households had children 60 months and younger, and because a simple random sampling method was used, the team surveyed about twice that number to ensure obtaining a sample of at least 271 households in each location with children 60 months and younger. The team actually surveyed 563 households in Jessore and 557 households in Tongi. This gives higher levels of precision for overall household-level variables. Topics in the baseline dataset include household composition, migration and education, status of employment and earnings, transfers, social assistance and other income, household assets, urban agriculture, savings, loans, housing, environment, water and sanitation, daily food, consumption, diarrhea and other illnesses, health, nutrition knowledge and practice, pre-school feeding, utilization of health care facilities for pregnancy/birth, anthropometry, community participation, general household livelihood security. The SHAHAR Census Survey was administered to all households in the selected settlement areas of Jessore and Tongi in April-May 2000. The total number of households in the census survey is estimated at 11,228 in Jessore and 13,664 in Tongi. The total number of household members is estimated at 51,832 persons in Jessore and 56,689 persons in Tongi. Topics include household demographics, literacy, gross monthly income, ownership of homestead land, housing, migration, water and sanitation facilities, and practice of urban agriculture.

Bangladesh Coping Strategies, 1998-99

The original objective for collecting this detailed household data set arose from the concern about food security of the rural households and non-availability of job opportunities during the flood of 1998 and in the period following the flood, and to suggest policy measures to improve household food security in a sustainable way. The data collected covers 757 households in seven flood-affected rural areas at three points in time over a period of a year between November 1998 and December 1999 to capture the difference in labor participation and food security in the period following the flood and to understand the capabilities of recovering from the shock of the flood. Topics in the household survey include household information, education, employment and training, agricultural activity, fishing and livestock activity, allocation of family labor, social assistance, household assets, credit, housing and sanitation, non-food spending, food expenditure and consumption, health status, and anthropometry. Topics in the community survey include level of agricultural production, employment, prices, cost of farming, economic activity, law and order, intervention programs, and information about the flood at the thana, union, and village level.

Bangladesh, Commercial Vegetable and Polyculture Fish Production 1996-1997

This dataset provides information on the impact of commercial vegetable and polyculture fish production on income, household resource allocation, and nutrition in Bangladesh. The questionnaire was administered to 5,541 individuals in 955 rural households in 47 villages in four rounds from June, 1996 through September, 1997. The data were collected as part of an impact evaluation of new agricultural technologies being disseminated through NGOs. Topics in the household survey include income, household value of consumed goods; social capital; shock history; credit given and obtained; inheritance/assets at wedding/divorce; family background; health care and birth control use; household sanitation behavior; reproductive history and mortality; nutrition knowledge; food preferences; women's autonomy and decision making. Topics in the community survey include temperature and rainfall. This dataset, along with the KwaZulu-Natal Income Dynamics Survey dataset and the Strengthening and Evaluation of the Hogares Comunitarios Program in Guatemala City dataset, were collected with the objective of examining to what extent intrahousehold allocation processes would affect the outcome of development policies, with particular emphasis on gender as a determinant of intrahousehold allocation. Because the data were designed to make some analyses comparable across countries, several modules are similar for all three datasets. The common modules include: information on assets at marriage of husband and wife, family background information, individual education and anthropometric data.
