Under the South Asia Biosafety Program, the ILSI Research Foundation and Biotech Consortium India Limited organized the annual South Asia Biosafety Conference (SABP) from September 14-16, 2019 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This conference provides a forum to hear from leading scientists representing regulatory agencies, public sector research institutions, and the private sector in South Asia and internationally.
On Monday, September 16, IFPRI Senior Research Fellow and Country Representative for Bangladesh Akhter Ahmed gave a keynote presentation on the major findings from the Bt brinjal impact study. The study aimed to assess the impacts of genetically modified (GM) brinjal, or eggplant, in Bangladesh. The study was designed by IFPRI's Policy Research and Strategy Support Program (PRSSP), implemented by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), with funding from the Government of Bangladesh and USAID.
