How can data be used to better understand market development, the spread of disease, or even the spread of ideas and innovations among rural Bangladeshi farmers? IFPRI-Bangladesh has been providing technical assistance to the one-year project Crowdsourcing Rural Data Collection, launched in northern Bangladesh in December 2015 by the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia. This project collects rural household data via Android smartphones from early-technology-adopting farmers and provides small allowances to those farmers as incentive for sending data. With a real-time window into the lives of rural farmers, researchers hope to gain insight into or early indications of issues such as intraseasonal variability or illnesses that could affect farmers.
