On March 6, 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture and the USAID-funded Policy Research and Strategy Support Program (PRSSP), implemented by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), jointly organized a half-day policy workshop to disseminate research-based evidence from the “Agriculture, Nutrition, and Gender Linkages (ANGeL)” project, and the Bt brinjal impact assessment. The event attracted 160 guests, and high-level participation from the Chief Guest Minister of Agriculture Md. Abdur Razzaque and other government officials.
The Bt brinjal study found that Bt brinjal reduced pest infestation, pesticide use, production costs, and lowered environmental and health risks, and increased yields and revenues. These results may guide USAID and the Ministry of Agriculture’s plans for roll-out.
The ANGeL study evaluated the impact of five combinations of agriculture production, nutrition, and gender sensitization trainings, and found that combining agriculture, nutrition, and gender trainings is most effective for improving agricultural and dietary diversity, farmers income, and empowering women. USAID may use this positive research-based evidence to inform its strategy in promoting nutrition- and gender-sensitive agriculture.
